Motorcycle Windshields
Your riding experience is being hampered by your lack of a windshield. You face wind fatigue, which makes you tire out faster when riding your Harley-Davidson® motorcycle. You get hit with rain, kicked-up debris, spray from other motorists, or even flying bugs. Installing a windshield blocks these annoyances so you can stay on the road longer.
We rounded up everything you need to know about motorcycle windshields below. For all your motorcycle needs, visit Barnes Harley-Davidson Kamloops. We proudly serve those in Kelowna, British Columbia.
Windshield Types
There are many different types of windshields you'll have to choose from. First, do you want a permanent one or a removable one? A permanent option offers convenience. Install once and never worry about it again. This one is best for those who know exactly what style they like. A removable option offers flexibility. Use it when you ride. Remove it when you transport or store your Harley-Davidson motorcycle. This one is best for those who want more options or who aren't quite sure exactly what type they want long-term.
Second, what material do you want your windshield to be made out of? The most common material is acrylic. It's the cheapest option. It also won't yellow over time and keeps its attractive shine. The downside is that it shatters more easily in a crash. The second most common is polycarbonate. This material is often found in helmet face shields and race car windows, so you know it's sturdy! It can be up to 20X more impact resistant than acrylic plastic ones. The downside is it can yellow over time and you can't buff out scratches. Either can be installed on Harley-Davidson motorcycles, so it's a matter of personal preference.
Third, do you want a tint? A tint helps reduce glare from the sun or from other motorists' headlights. This improves your visibility so you can drive safer. But make sure the tint isn't too dark (which would hurt your visibility in low-light settings).
Windshield Height
Once you get your perfect windshield, your next step is to install it on your Harley-Davidson motorcycle. You need it to be installed at the right height to get the maximum benefits. When it's too tall, your line of salt will go straight through the shield. If mud or water get on the screen, it'll hurt your ability to see clearly. When it's too short, you won't get the right protection and will still endure a fair amount of wind.
You'll want the top of the windshield to line up with your nose. It should be as wide as your Harley-Davidson motorcycle. Some prefer to get a narrower option for aesthetic reasons, but you'll lose some wind protection. Up to you!
Upgrading Your Harley-Davidson® Motorcycle
Nearly everyone benefits from upgrading their Harley-Davidson bike with a windshield. Those who gain the most are those who ride their motorcycles more often. If you commute to work or take long-distance trips, you'll especially want to make the upgrade. The only people who may hesitate are those with vintage or rare motorcycles (since the windshield will hurt the aesthetic and you won't ride them often to get a reasonable benefit from it).
Ready to make the upgrade? Visit Barnes Harley-Davidson Kamloops. Our parts replacement and service department can help give you advice or assistance with the upgrade process. We also carry a range of new and used motorcycles if you are looking to buy. It's easy to find the perfect model for your price point and riding lifestyle. We proudly serve those in Kelowna, Kamloops, Vernon, Merritt, and Cranbrook, British Columbia as well as Calgary, Alberta.
